Abstract:
The south summit of the Formosa Ridge, located at the Southwestern Taiwan, is one of the most active cold seep sites observed around the passive South China Sea continental margin. Based on the bathymetric data obtained by both R/V-and ROV-mounted multibeam echo sounder systems and the video and image data recorded by ROV, the topographic and geomorphological features of the cold seep site and the seabed surficial expressions of the cold seep system were described and analyzed. It has been shown that, compared with that of the cold seep site collected by R/V mounted multi-beam system, bathymetric data acquired with near seabed ROV-mounted multibeam system has higher accuracy and resolution, and that both macro-and micro morphological features of the survey site can be displayed on the relief map created with it. According to the video and image data collected by ROV, the Formosa Ridge cold system is characterized by the huge authigenic carbonate mound with flourishing chemoautotrophic communities and sporadic seep vents developed on it. The seabed surficial expression of this cold seep system mainly include authigenic carbonate structures with various morphological features, chemoautotrophic communities, sporadic seep vents, and reductive sediments, all of which correlate well with the seabed topographical and geomorphological characteristics.
