Fosl。 |

Abstract: |
We had described (1981) crustaceous coralline algae, Lithothamnium pacificum (Fosl.) Fosl. and 2 other doubtful species from Huangxian, Shandong Province, known for their medicinal value as expectorant, cough remedy, antipyretic, etc. or known as “ Hai fu shi” in Chinese herbal pharmacopoeia. Further extensive collections made in other districts and a comparative study of their morphology with the use of SEM, made possible the distinguishing of 4 species of Lithothamnium from the North China Coasts, viz., 1. L. aculeiferum L. R. Mason, 2. L. fretense Fosl., 3. L. intermedium Kjellman, 4. L. pacificum (Fosl.) Fosl. Among them, L. aculeiferum and L. fretense are new to China. In this paper, L. pacificum is referred only to those distributed in the intertidal zone and L. pacificum sensu Zhang and Zhou is revised as L. fretense. Besides, L. fretense is quite similar to L. japonicum in their changeable outer morphology, though L. japonicum often becomes flat and often has well developed branches, the cover cells of L. japonicum are rather different from the former. More careful comparisons between L. japonicum and L. fretense are necessary in future.
In the XIth International Seaweed Symposium, we had listed 6 species in the form of poster. Besides the above 4 species, other 2 species i.e. Lithothamnium sp. aff. fornicatum f. apiculata Fosl. and L. intermedium sensu Zhang and Zhou (1983) are doubtful after our carefully comparative study. L. intermedium which we refered to L. sp. sensu Zhang and Zhou (1983) has very peculiar characteristics, with sporic conceptacles most readily detached after discharge and seems to be only superficial, not always growing down into the frond. After comparing our specimens with the Japanese one sent kindly by Prof. Masaki, we refer this species to L. intermedium rather than to L. intermedium sensu Zhang and Zhou (1983), because our specimens have a close resemblance to the Japanese one of L. intermedium in both their inner structure of the thallus and their well developed basal crust, but differ from it in having branches repeatedly divided, which often form dense bundles and in the number of muciferous canals in each sporangial conceptacle, etc. Of course, type study is necessary in future. L. intermedium may account for 50-70% of “ Hai fu shi” in Huangxian, Shandong Province. |
