Abstract: |
In this study, beak morphometric variables (Rostrum, Hood, Crest, Lateral wall and Wing length of upper and lower beaks) for five economic cephalopods (Uroteuthis edulis, Uroteuthis duvauceli, Sepia esculenta, Sepiella maindroni and Octopus ocellatus) from the coastal waters of China were used to make stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA) and principal component analysis (PCA). Univariate analyses of variance (ANOVA) showed that all measured beak variables are specific difference significantly (p < 0.001), with S. esculenta having the largest beak and O. ocellatus having the smallest beak. SDA suggested that beak variables are useful for species identification with upper lateral wall length (ULWL), upper hood length (UHL) and lower crest length (LCL) contributing to the most of the variations, and the overall cross-validation classification rate was 96.2%. In contrast, standardized beak variables showed more effective than original beak variables according to higher reclassification rate (100%) where standardized lower rostrum length (LRLs) and standardized lower wing length (LWLs) contributed the most of the variations. PCA showed that the corrected classification rate are both reach to 100% when original and standardized beak variables were used in the identifying species of loliginids and cuttlefishes. In summary, we developed a new method to determine cephalopod species, which will provide some useful information for the research in relevant fields of Chinese scholars. |
