Fan Xiao, a professor of Institute of Oceanology, Academia Sinica, male, born in Shandong Province in Oct. 1942. Graduated from the department of Biology, Ocean University of Qingdao in 1967. Vice-chairman director of the China Seaweed Industry Society. He studied seaweed chemistry and the exploitation and utilization of seaweed resources, finished more than ten state major research projects and international cooperative research projects, and has remarkable achievements to his credits especially in the field of development and progress of the seaweed industry such as “Investigation of the National Seaweed Source and Study of Its Utilization–a major project of the Department of Agriculture", “Study and Utilization of Active Iodine in Seaweed--the Eighth Five Year Plan Key Project of the State Science and Technology and a key project of the Chinese academy of Sciences", “The Chemical Characteristics and Utilization of Brown Seaweed–with Indonesia", “Study of Seaweed Chemical Characteristics and Use–with Indonesia and Japan". His research group has developed more than six new products since the late 70 's and earned 2 third prizes for scientific and technical progress, awarded 5 second prizes for excellent academic achievements by Shandong Province. His cosmetic products made from seaweed extraction won an international fair Gold Medal for new products developed from sea. He has published 50 papers in international and domestic publications, including the book–“Use and Processing of Seaweeds” (Science Press, 1994). He received the Labor medal of “Fuminxinglu” awarded by the Shandong Government in 1992, and is one of the Five Hundred Leaders of Influence in the World compiled by the American Biographical Institute, Inc. in 1994.
