YOUNG FISH DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGIST ANDBREEDING GENETICIST-GUI JIANFANG
Editorial Office, Ooeanologia et Limnologia Sinica
Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao 266071
Abstract:
Gui Jianfang, male, born in June 28 1956 in Huangmei, Hubei Province, is Professor of Developmental Biology and Genetics, Supervisor of M. Sc. and Ph. D candidates, Dean of the Department of Fish Genetics and Breeding, Member of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He graduated B. S. from Wuhan University in 1982 and M. Sc. in 1984, majoring in Cell Biology and Genetics. He has worked in the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, since 1985. He worked as a Visiting Professor from 1991 to 1992 at Medical College of Ohio, and as Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Scientist from 1992 to 1994 at the University of California, San Diego, USA. He was conferred a Ph. D. degree, and promoted to Professor in 1995 by the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

His researches involved cytogenetics, cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology and biotechnology for fish breeding. As chief scientist, he undertook and completed 10 scientific projects, and is undertaking 5 projects. In the field of cytogenetics, he analyzed karyotypes of more than 30 freshwater fishes. Artificial gynogenetic diploid, triploid and tetraploid fishes were obtained by cytoengineering chromosome set manipulation. He researched the cytological mechanism of induction, the causes of developmental obstacles of spermatogenesis and oogenesis, and meiotic chromosome behavior, by setting up a series of experiments on the artificial triploid transparent crucian carp. During his studies on developmental biology and developmental engineering, multiple tetraploids were discovered from the artificially propagated populations of allogynogenetic silver crucian carp, and two different reproductive development modes of the eggs were revealed in the multiple tetraploid fish. In the fields of cellular and molecular biology, he piloted an experimental system to study the nuclear organization and trafficking of pre-mRNA splicing factors during the cell cycle, and identified a novel cell cycle regulated kinase specific for a family of splicing factors containing a serine and arginine-rich domain. He then biochemically purified the kinase, and cloned its gene. More than 80 of his scientific papers have been published in international and national journals, including “Nature”, “Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA”, “Sciences in China", “Chinese Science Bulletin”, “J. of Fish Biology (England)”, etc.

His research group won National Natural Science Second Class Award (1995) from the state Science and Technology commission and Natural Science Third Class Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1995) for scientific achievements in “Studies on the Mechanism of Natural Gynogenesis in Silver, Crucian Carp” and “Artificial Triploid Transparent Crucian Carp and its Cytogenetics”. He received many honors from national government and scientific organizations, such as Award of China Youth for Science and Technology (1988). He was conferred the National Academic Degree with Outstanding Achievements (1991), Young ‘Scientist Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1995), Distinguished Young Scientist Grant from the National Natural Science Foundation (1994), Distinguished Young Scholar Award from the Qiu Shi Science and Technologies Foundation (1996), and the title of Outstanding Scientist from Hubei Province (1996).

Professor Gui is Standing Director of the Chinese Ichthology Society, Committee Member of the Chinese Developmental Biology Society, and Deputy Secretary General of the Hubei Genetics Society. He is Editorial Board Member of the English language Scientific Journal “Cell Research”, Chinese Scientific Journals “New Advances in Cell Biology” and “Chinese Journal of Zoology”. He is a Brain Trust Member of the Wuhan City Science and Technology Commission.
