Abstract:
Professor WANG Tao, male, born in Changyi County of Shandong Province in January, 1934, native Chinese. In 1960, he graduated from the Ocean University of Qingdao; in the same year, he was assigned to the Institute of Oceanology, The Chinese Academy of Sciences, majoring in ocean wave research.

In 1963, for the first time, he established the swell spectrum which can be used to describe the growth and decay of swells, on the basis of the concepts of wave spreading and wave filtering. In 1978, during the oil field exploration of Bohai BZ28-1 cooperated with Japan, he insisted on reducing the designed wave height from 12m (insisted by Japanese experts) to below 7.8 m on the basis of detailed and thorough studies, thus, a lot of raw materials were saved. In 1979, he, together with HOU Guo-ben, submitted a proposal to use Lianyungang instead of Shijiu as a Iocation for deep water harbor construction, which was adopted by the government. Because this suggestion has great social and economical benefits, he was awarded a second class First Excellent Suggestion Award of China Science Association. In 1984, he studied the disaster and characteristics of No.8114 Typhoon storm waves systematically, and propose a strategy to reduce this kind of disasters. This achievement were awarded a second class Scientific & Technological Achievement Prize of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since 1985, he has undertaken 11 exploration projects including National Scientific & Technological Key Projects and projects for coastal oil fields. He developed numerical methods to predict ocean disasters. Rather than considering the various factor individually, for the first time, he established a Wind, Wave, Current, Tide and Storm Comprehensive Numerical Model, representing a new level for the research of ocean disasters. In 1994, he studied and formulated the general development plan of Qingdao harbors and the harbor industry. By multi-object and multi-factor analysis, the harbor coastal line was planned according to industrial needs. This plan has been approved by the People's Representative Committee of Qingdao. He suggested that the ocean disaster was marked by the damage of ocean engineering structures, and since 1995 he has developed the research on the risk assessment of ocean engineering structures. He established the risk assessment method for ocean structures and built the computer pre-assessment software estimating the risk degree, which provided a technique for reducing the disasters.

He has published 54 papers and research reports in Chinese and international academic journals and two books. The book “Ocean Exploration and Development Environment of Chengdao Island", written by himself and Professor YANG Zuo-sheng, analyzed and summarized the achievements of investigations into marine hydrology, meteorology, geology, environmental protection in the Yellow River Mouth area. Since 1990, he has acted as a member of the expert group of post-doc researchers in physical oceanography, at the Institute of Oceanology, The Chinese Academy of Sciences.
