Abstract: |
Seasonal comprehensive investigations for the Sanggou Bay area was carried out by the First Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration in Aug. and Dec. in 1989 and Feb. and May in 1990. Sanggou Bay is a cultivation developed shallow water ecosystem. In order to understand the situation of light energy transformation in the process of primary production in this water, based on in situ measurements, the light absorption and light quantum yield of phytoplankton in the four months of different seasons were studied. Measurements were carried out at the No. 1063 station in the middle of the Bay. The 14C in situ culture was used to measure the rate of photosynthesis and a two-channel liquid scintillation counter was used to determine the radioactivity of 14C absorbed by the sample. Chlorophyll a was measured by spectrophotometry and determined by Jeffery-Humphrey equation.
A qsp-170 quantum meter was used to measure the light intensity. The results show that the light energy absorbed by phytoplankton takes the 0.9%–5.5% of the total energy absorbed on the sea surface, which is much lower than that of the Bohai Sea (1.46%–11%). The quantum yield of this area ranges between 0.189×10-2 and 6.019×10-2mol C (mol quantum)-1, in which the results of Aug. and Dec. in 1989 and Feb. and may in 1990 are 0.302×10-2–6.019×10-2, 0.566×10-2–1.31×10-2, 0.288×10-2–1.65×10-2 and 0.189×10-2–0.917×10-2 molC (mol quantum)-1, respectively. Maximum values appeared in the bottom water in Aug.1989 and minimum appeared in the surface water in May 1990. The light utilization efficiency of phytoplankton ranges from 0.026% to 0.101% which is at the lower end of 0.01%–1.0% determined by Morel (1978) for eastern Pacific waters where the primary productivity is at a general level. The low light utilization efficiency accounts for the cultivation of marine organisms in a high density which must have an effect on the light transmission under water. |
