Abstract: |
We investigated the covering behavior of sea urchins Glyptocidaris crenularis and Strongylocentrotus intermedius in different temperatures and temperature changing schemes. The experimental results show that the number of G crenularis in covering behavior and the number of shells used for covering at 5°C were significantly less than those at 15 and 25°C (P < 0.05). However, the covering behavior of G. crenularis showed no significant difference at 15 and 25°C (P > 0.05). The numbers of S. intermedius in covering behavior and shells used for covering were significantly less at 25°C than at 5 and 15°C (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in covering behavior of S. intermedius at 5 and 15°C (P > 0.05). The number of shells used for covering by G. crenularis in 5→20°C was significantly less than in 15→20°C and 25→20°C (P < 0.05), while the latter two groups did not differ significantly (P > 0.05). The number of shells used for covering by S. intermedius at 25→20°C was significantly less than 5→20°C and 15→20°C (P < 0.05), while the number of shells used by S. intermedius in the latter two groups showed no significant difference (P > 0.05). The present study provides new information in behavioral ecology of sea urchins. |
