Abstract: |
The five-year project WPOS (Western Pacific Ocean System: Structure, Dynamics and Consequences) is so far the biggest project in marine science and technology undertaken by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. WPOS offered a good opportunity to research into the Western Pacific systematically. It is the first time for us to organize more than 500 scientists and technologists from multiple fields involving physics, chemistry, biology, and geology on the same research vessel and in the same ocean areas. WPOS project covered regions from the coastal zones of Chinese seas to the tropical Western Pacific and beyond. The implementation of WPOS allowed us to better comprehend the complexity of the coastal ecosystem and the mystery of the deep sea, and the vital roles of the equipment, platforms, and technologies for ocean exploring and research. WPOS has achieved greatly, especially in the deep-sea research, laying a foundation for the comprehensive and multidiscipline exploitation for the deep-sea resources and coastal ecosystem safety. However, more challenges remain in the future. |
