Abstract:
Spartina alterniflora, an important invasive alien plant in China''s coastal wetlands, can alter the structure of intertidal food webs by changing the sources of organic matter and energy transfer pathways. To investigate the trophic structure and energy transfer pathways of the benthic ecosystem in the intertidal zone of Xiangshan Bay, and to evaluate the effects of the invasive species Spartina alterniflora on the intertidal ecosystem, five potential carbon sources and 28 biological samples were collected from the Spartina alterniflora-colonized intertidal zone of Xiangshan Bay in July 2023. Stable isotope techniques were applied to analyze the isotopic characteristics of each component, and the MixSIAR model was used to estimate the contributions of different carbon sources to macrobenthic organisms, thereby constructing the benthic food web structure. The results showed that δ¹³C and δ¹?N values differed significantly among different macrobenthic groups (Pp < 0.05). The trophic levels of benthic organisms ranged from 1.79 to 3.48, with fish occupying the highest trophic level and bivalves the lowest. Detrital carbon sources composed of Spartina alterniflora, sediment organic matter (SOM), and particulate organic matter (POM) contributed 59.5%, exceeding the contribution of planktonic sources (40.5%). Spartina alterniflora was an important carbon source for all groups except fish and played a key role in promoting the dominance of the detrital pathway. The benthic food web in Xiangshan Bay is jointly supported by detrital and planktonic pathways, with a stronger reliance on the detrital pathway. This study provides a scientific reference for understanding the effects of Spartina alterniflora colonization on the structure and energy flow of the benthic food web in the intertidal zone of Xiangshan Bay.
