Abstract:
Corbicula and its related taxa (Cyrenodonax and Cyrenobatissa), as well as species of the genus Geloina, are widely distributed in China and possess considerable economic value. However, their phylogenetic relationships remain controversial. In this study, morphological characteristics and molecular data (16S, COI, and Cytb) were combined to systematically evaluate the phylogenetic relationships among Corbicula, Cyrenodonax, Cyrenobatissa, and Geloina based on extensive sample analyses. In particular, molecular data for the endemic Chinese taxa Cyrenodonax and Cyrenobatissa depressa, which are largely absent from public databases such as NCBI, were supplemented in this study. The results showed that Geloina formed a stable and highly supported independent clade in the molecular phylogenetic trees, clearly separated from the Corbicula-related taxa and exhibiting relatively large genetic distances. Morphological characteristics also revealed distinct differences between Geloina and Corbicula. In contrast, Corbicula, Cyrenodonax, and Cyrenobatissa clustered within the same clade, indicating close phylogenetic relationships. Morphological analyses further demonstrated high similarity in shell morphology among these taxa, whereas they differed markedly from Geloina. Further clustering analyses incorporating other genera within Cyrenidae indicated that Corbicula, Cyrenodonax, Cyrenobatissa, Batissa, and Villorita shared closer phylogenetic affinities and should be classified within Cyrenidae. In contrast, Geloina clustered with Polymesoda and Cyanocyclas, supporting their placement within Cyrenoididae
