PRELIMINARY STUDY ON COLOUR VISION OF CUTTLEFISH (Sepiella maindroni de Rechebrune) |
|
Abstract: |
The peak of the ERG-determined scotopic spectral sensitivity (Sλ) curve is at 490nm on the intact anesthetized cuttlefish, and no secondary peak was observed. Exposed to white and coloured light of different intensities, it shows no Purkinje shift, nor double peak and both peak and shape of Sλ curve remain unchanged. It is suggested that only one receptor system is present in the retina of cuttlefish. As a result, the colour-diseriminating ability appears to be lacking in the cuttlefish, that is to say, it’s colour-blind. |
