AN ANALYSIS OF TEMPERATURE, SALINITY AND CURRENT MEASURED IN THE COLD EDDY AREA OF THE NORTHERN EAST CHINA SEA IN JULY, 1980 |

Abstract: |
The primary data obtained from thermohaline section and mooring current are presented in this paper. Horizontal distributions of temperature and salinity revealed that two isolated circular low temperature centers with relatively high salinity appeared in the upper layer of the survey area, one of them was located to the north slope of the Changjiang River bank off the northern coast of Jiangsu province, the other one was located to the southwest of Cheju Island. The former was presumably caused by upwelling along submarine topograph. And the latter was probably caused by upwelling due to cyclonic eddy. The appearance of the eddy southwest of Cheju Island was identified by the mean residual currents and thermal structure measured in July, 1980. Change of the residual current with time in this area was quite obvious. The change of the residual current in the upper layer seemed to be related to wind. The thermocline was imagined as important barrier limiting the momentum of winddriven current transferring downward. Spectral analysis of current data showed that the 1/6 and 1/8 day’s tidal components also have significant energies in some layers in shallow water besides the 1/4 day’s tidal component. |
