THE SUBMARINE GEOMORPHOLOGICAL ZONES AND GEOMORPHOLOGICAL TYPES IN THE HUANGHAI SEA
Abstract:
Analyses of continuous sounding records, side scan sonar records, sub-bottom strata records and other data show that the Huanghai Sea can be divided into seven geomorphologic zones, namely: 1) the bay tidal sand ridges and island-reef geomorphologic zone in the northern Huanghai Sea, 2) the submarine slope and the submarine terrace geomorphologic zone in the coastal zone of the Shandong Peninsula, 3) the weak-accumulation erosional plain geomorphologic zone in the western part of the southern Huanghai Sea, 4) the old Huanghe River-old Changjiang River delta accumulation plain geomorphologic zone, 5) the eastern erosion-accumulation plain geomorphologic zone, 6) the shallow accumulation plain geomorphologic zone in the center of the Huanghai Sea, and 7) the Strait geomorphologic zone. Tidal sand ridges, tidal channels and well-developed scouring trough around the Huanghai Sea are its prominent geomorphic features. The northern Huanghai Sea and the southern Huanghai Sea are actually two large paleo-intermonutainous basins. In the geologic past, as a result of several transgression-regression sequences, vast amount of terrigeneous material filled up the two basins into one, forming the present Huanghai continental shallow sea basin.
Key words:  Bottom geomorphological zones, Tidal sand ridge, Submarine delta, shallow sea plain, Old intermountainous basin
