Abstract:
The influence of light on the growth and chemical constituents of Ulva pertusa thalli were investigated. When light intensity was below 12500 lx, the growth rate of U. pertusa was positively correlated with the light intensity; but this trend was reversed when light intensity was above 12500 lx (P< 0.05). Analysis of chemical constituents at the final stages of thalli growth revealed that the contents of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b decreased with the increase of light intensity (P<0.05). The synthesis of protein was accelerated at low light intensity. In addition, levels of osmolytes (free proline) at 17500 lx and 20000 lx were significantly higher than those at other light intensities (P< 0.05). The content of nitrogen increased when the light intensity was increased from 2500 to 15000 lx. However, this trend was reversed when the light intensity exceeded 17500 lx. The content of carbon had similar trends. Moreover, the content of hydrogen increased with the increase of light intensity.
