Investigation of artificial shoreline seaweed along the Yellow Sea coast in Liaoning Province
Abstract:
To investigate the diversity of the benthic marine algae along the artificial shoreline of the Yellow Sea coast in Liaoning Province, we have investigated the seaweed species on the artificial shoreline at Dalian Bay, Zhangzi Island, Lvshun and Dandong from October 2011 to June 2012, and we compared them with the species on the nearby natural shoreline. Total of 17 species of marine algae were found on the artificial shoreline, and most of them were red and green algae, 11 species of them can be found from the nearby natural shoreline. The order of the diversity is: the natural shoreline>hybrid shoreline>artificial shoreline. The number of green algae on the artificial shoreline was almost the same as that on the natural shoreline. In the area of Dalian Bay and Zhangzi Island, the lower the concentration of inorganic nitrogen is, the higher the diversity of algae is; the higher the pH is, the higher the diversity of algae is. During this period, we found a hybrid shoreline where artificial shoreline can coexist with natural shoreline. This hybrid shoreline can be seen as a variant of the living shoreline. The hybrid shoreline provided a new thread to biological conservation and ecological restoration.
