Abstract:
A recurrent floating green algae bloom was detected in the Yellow Sea since 2007. The Ulva. prolifera is non-toxic, but the massive accumulations can result in significant environmental damage and cause economic loss to marine industries. In this study, we investigate the spatial and temporal patterns of Ulva. prolifera green tides in the Yellow Sea during 2014 using HJ-1A/1B satellite images by means of Neural Network Supervised Classification (NNSC) and RULE Image classification threshold segmentation. Results show that a little Ulva. prolifera was discovered in adjacent sea of Yan Cheng, Jiang Su province in middle May with distribution area 2.299km2, influence area 1744.799 km2. The bloom reached a maximum, 1367.145km2, until middle June and were widely distributed in the Yellow Sea. Distribution area and relative aggregation density decreased rapidly since end-June, however, influential area reached a peak value. In early August Ulva. Prolifera died out around coastal of Qing Tao, and Ulva. Prolifera had not been monitored from remote images on August 20. It existed about 101 days. The Ulva. Prolifera bloom experienced successively five stages, i.e. appearance, development, outbreak, recession and demise. In another sense, Ulva. Prolifera in the Yellow Sea drifted subsequently from Yancheng coast of Jiangsu province to Qingdao coast of Shandong province, and reached Yantai the farthest coast.
