Abstract: |
As oil and gas exploration have gradually advanced to the deep ocean, submarine slides have drawn increasing concern in the study of deep-water deposition processes. To understand the role of slope failures in shelf-break evolution, in this study, we combined geomorphological analysis and seismic interpretation based on newly acquired 2D/3D seismic data. Based on our results, we identified multiple Neogene submarine slides occurring in the continental shelf break area of the Pearl River Mouth Basin and delineated their distributions. This newly understood geological mode indicates that the combined action of relative sea-level change and fluid flow may trigger these slope failures, which were initiated and retrograded upwards from submarine canyon headward erosion, and terminated in the continental shelf break area. |
