Determination of REEs in the seawater adjacent to China using ICP-MS with a Nobias-chelate PA1 resin

Abstract:
The concentration of rare earth elements (REEs) in seawater (pmol/kg) is generally estimated at the pmol/L level. As REEs are useful tools in the study of marine geochemistry, it is necessary to accurately determine their abundance in seawater. In this study, a highly sensitive and precise method is developed using the chelating resin Nobias-chelate PA1 in an offline preconcentration manifold. Magnetic sector detection using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to analyze the REEs in coastal seawater samples. The optimal experimental parameters were determined when the pH ranges from 4.59–4.69, buffer volume is 6 mL, and elution volume is 2 mL. The detection limits of this method are 0.001 and 0.424 pmol/kg. The relative standard deviations (RSD) of the five replicate analyses of REEs in seawater were observed to be better than 5%. This method can be used to analyze REEs in rivers, estuaries, and seawater.
