Abstract:
The change of erosion and deposition of bare flats outside a mangrove area is very important to the living environment of the mangrove. In this paper, the Yingluo Bay area, Southwest China, is taken as a case study. Digital elevation models (DEMs) of the bare flats in 2008 and 2015 were built using the waterlines extracted from remote sensing images. The waterlines were assigned heights using elevations predicted by the hydrodynamic finite-volume coastal ocean model (FVCOM) via an iterative process. The analysis of erosion and accretion changes between 2008 and 2015 show that the bare flat near the bayhead was in a state of deposition and that the bare flat from the entrance to the middle area had the trend of accretion-stability-erosion from the upper to the lower bare flat. The spatial difference of erosion-accretion distribution in the upper flat is not only related to the expansion of the mangrove area to the sea but also to human activities.
