Abstract:
Litter decomposition of intertidal wetland plants is related to the environmental temperature. The Suaeda salsa population growth and litter decomposition model was constructed in this study using the STELLA software based on the principle of System Dynamics. The annual biomass of the plants was compared with the litter decomposition within different temperature scenarios (initial temperature, raised by 2.5℃, and 5℃) resolved after simulation. The model results showed that there were significant differences in the annual changes of biomass between the plants and the litter. The trends in annual changes to aboveground and underground biomass were shown as rapid growth (stable and constant) followed by fast-decreased, while the annual changes in the aboveground and underground litter were decline-rapid and rise-decline. The increment in temperature led to the increase of the biomass and decrease of the litter decomposition, which caused the augmentation of litter organic mass and reduction of carbon release. This study has revealed the decomposition and changes that have taken placein plant litter in coastal wetlands in the context of global warming, which has been conducive to the in-depth understanding of the role of coastal wetland vegetation in the process of carbon source and sink.
