Abstract:
During summer, cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies typically occur pairwise as a dipole off eastern Vietnam (DEV); moreover, an eastward offshore jet (EOJ) exists between the DEV. The DEV–EOJ can substantially increase the chlorophyll concentration and alter the phytoplankton distribution in the region. The DEV generally occurs in the summer and dissipates by autumn. At the center of the cyclonic eddy, the salinity is high, and the temperature is low; at the center of the anticyclonic eddy, the salinity is low, and the temperature is high. The generation and dissipation of the DEV–EOJ are closely related to the southwest monsoon and are also affected by the El Ni?o–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and other basin-scale atmospheric changes. Although the DEV–EOJ have been previously studied, the following issue persists: the influence of DEV on 1) the dynamic and ecological environment in the middle layers of the South China Sea, 2) the deep circulation in the southwest South China Sea, and 3) the effects of ocean–atmosphere interactions on the process and dynamic mechanism of the DEV–EOJ. Thus, long-term large-area synchronous-array observations will help address these concerns.
