Abstract:
Ecological damage and environmental costs are fundamental problems restricting the development and utilization of islands in China. In this study, we use the ecological restoration project at Sanjiao Island of Zhuhai as an example of introducing the application of aggregate spray-seeding technology on the damaged slopes of islands. We also analyzed the restorative effects and carbon sequestration value of this technology by utilizing legumes as the primary sprayed plant. The restorative impacts at different time points demonstrated that the legumes exhibited rapid growth, formed high-ground coverage, and established stable communities along with the native species while achieving significant carbon sequestration. After 18 months of restoration, the land surface coverage reached an impressive 99.96%, with a carbon density of restored vegetation of 3 923.86 g/m2. The newly added green space sequestered a total of 1 438.75 t CO2, and the estimated value of the additional carbon sink was 121, 000 yuan RMB. Therefore, ecological restoration prior to developing and utilizing uninhabited islands has clear environmental benefits. It can effectively alleviate the pressure of ecological compensation for tourism development and is suitable for widespread promotion.
