Abstract:
Ocean fronts are significant oceanic phenomena characterized by intense advection and vertical mixing within frontal zones, which induce abrupt variations in hydrographic properties and exert profound influences on the ecological behavior of marine organisms. Using sea surface temperature data in combination with high-resolution climatological numerical model data for China’s offshore waters based on the ROMS model, this study analyzes the distribution characteristics and seasonal variations of temperature fronts in the coastal waters of Shandong Province using the Sobel method and identifies three predominant temperature fronts in the region: the coastal front, the Yellow Sea Warm Current front, and the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass front. Among the three temperature fronts, the coastal front is predominantly distributed in nearshore shallow waters and can be categorized into a thermodynamic temperature front and a tidal temperature front. In winter, temperature fronts are widespread across all water layers owing to seawater cooling and the influence of the Yellow Sea Warm Current. In late spring, the tidal front and the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass front begin to form. In summer, the surface temperature front weakens significantly, whereas the tidal front and the cold-water mass front below the surface layer intensify, with the most pronounced temperature front occurring at depths of approximately 15 m below the sea surface. In autumn, the tidal front and the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass front gradually dissipate, whereas the Yellow Sea Warm Current front develops and reaches its peak intensity in winter. The thermodynamic temperature front, driven by temperature differences arising from differential heating and cooling rates between nearshore and offshore regions, persists throughout all seasons.
