New distribution record of Boasaxius princeps (Boas, 1880)

Abstract:
In April and December 2025, several specimens of Boasaxius princeps (Boas, 1880) were collected from the coastal waters of Lvshunkou District, Dalian, marking the first formal record and description of this species in China. This finding extends the known geographic distribution of B. princeps from the coasts of Korea and the Japanese and Russian shores of the Sea of Japan to the northern Yellow Sea, specifically the Lvshun coastal area in southern Dalian. The present study provides an elaborated morphological description of the specimens, discusses the seldom-mentioned sexual dimorphism of B. princeps in anecdotal references, and proposes that the morphology of the first pleopod can be used for sex identification. Given its burrowing behavior and regular occurrence in the local seafood market, it is inferred that B. princeps has established a stable population in the Lvshun area. This establishment may have resulted from larval settlement introduced via ballast water during maritime transport in Northeast Asia. Alternatively, climatic changes and anomalous ocean current patterns may have enabled the larvae of B. princeps to cross the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass and settle in the northern Yellow Sea or disperse further into the Bohai Sea.
