Abstract:
Chen Guohua, Professor. Ph. D. Supervisor of the Department of Chemistry, Ocean University of Qingdao. was born in Zhejiang Province on Feb. 1938. He graduated from the Chemistry Department of Shandong University in 1960, since then he has been engaged in teaching and research in the area of marine physical chemistry. He has made important academic and practical contributions in the research and development of electrode type, nonthermostat salinometer in China. He has developed two series and five type salinometers. A set of determination for relative and absolute conductivity of solution or seawater was patented in 1993. HD-1 type was awarded National Science Prizes in 1978. HD-2 type was awarded Fourth Prize for National Invention in 1983. He supervises production of Chinese Standard Seawater, promote the practical Salinity Scale (1978). and the International Equation of the State of Seawater (1980) for application to ocean research in China. His achievements have earned him the following honors: National Middle-aged and Young Specialist with Outstanding Contributions. Person With Outstanding Expertise in Science and Technology in Shandong Province. Most Outstanding Scientific Worker of the University in Shandong Province.

In order to explore the validity of the International Equation of the State of Seawater (1980) for application to China coastal waters, he has investigated the relationship among density. Salinity, temperature and ratio of major ions in the seawater of the Changjiang River Estuary, Huanghe River Estuary, Bohai Bay, Jiaozhou Bay. etc. Some equations of the state of China coastal seawater were the first presented based on the experimented density data of seawater.

He has studied the interfacial tension of respective aromatic hydrocarbon, cycloalkane, alkane / seawater in different temperature and salinity ranges. He was the first to derive empirical equations of interfacial tension relating temperature and salinity. He is responsible for two research programs: one each from the National Natual Science Foundation of China (NNSFC) and the State Commission of Science and Technology. Now he is engaged in the development of a new type of treating agent for oil spills and in study of the physical chemistry characteristics of estuary seawater in China. More than 50 of his papers have been published in major oceanology journals in China. He has published two books: "Conductivity of Seawater" (1981) and “Appliced Electro-Chelnistry (1994).
