Prof. Dr. Song Weibo (Weibo Song) was born in December 1958 in Shandong Province. He got his Ph. D. in 1988 in the institute of Zoology, University of Bonn. Germany and was appointed Professor in 1992 in the Ocean University of Qingdao, China, and is now Director of the Open Laboratory of Aquaculture of the State Educational Committee. Doctor-supervisor and permanent member of the Chinese Society of Protozoolog.
Since 1982 he has been engaged in the fields of taxonomy, ecology. cell development and ontogeny of protozoa; and worked on many ciliate groups from almost all biotopes: free living, commensal or parasitic forms in marine, Antarctica, freshwater and soil habitats. He (usually as senior author) and his colleagues discovered and established many new categories including 5 new families, 13 new genera, more than 50 new species, about 20 new combinations or new names. At the same time, he erected and described morphological modes of 17 genera / species. Representative of his over 50 academic papers published are 1) Taxonomic researches on ciliata of periphyton (Protozoa, Ciliophora) in the Poppelsdorfer Weiher, Bonn (1989); 2) Infraciliature and silverline system of the ciliate Pseudovorticella trepida, n. g., n. comb. and establishment of a new family (1990); Morphology and morphogenesis of the freshwater scuticociliate Uronema nigricans (1991); Morphogenesis of the soil ciliate Bakuella edaphoni n. sp. and revision of the genus Bakuella (1992); Contribution to the morphogenesis of the marine ciliate Diophrys scutum (1993); On two soil ciliates of the genus Dileptus (1994); Taxonomy and ecology of the ciliate fauna in the endopagial and pelagial of the Weddel Sea, Antarctica (1995).
