Abstract:
The time difference in the Estuarine Coastal Ocean Model with semi-implicit scheme (ECOM-si) is the Euler forward scheme. The model has a weak instability in the case of low eddy viscosity. We adopted a predictor-corrector scheme to change the Coriolis terms in the model equations into a semi-implicit scheme, and proved theoretically that the model stability is improved.By designing a high resolution grids and considering the real coasts and bottom topography, the combination of the transports at the open boundaries, density gradient forcing and wind stress, the modified model was applied to numerical simulate the circulation in the Bohai,Yellow and East China Seas in winter. The model stability was improved on the basis of evidence from numerical experiments. The modified Estuarine Coastal Ocean Model reconstructed fairly successful the circulation patterns of Kuroshio, Taiwan Warm Current, Tsushima Warm Current,Yellow Sea Warm Current and coast currents. The simulated results are fairly consistent with the previous observations and studies.
