Abstract:
Based upon the processing of LANDSAT Thematic Mapper(TM) images of Jilantai Salt Lake, the authors analyzed and interpreted the characteristics of the tectonics, geomorphology and water system of the area. Further, the formation and evolution of Jilantai Salt Lake and its water source were discussed. The results indicate that the NNS dextral diagonal, formed by the Helan Mountain Ridge, the Jilantai Depression and the Bayinwula Mountain Ridge, represents a basic tectonic feature of the region. The geomorphic system consists of mountainous regions of bass rock, platforms, mountain pediments, sand areas and basins. The water masses originated form the mountainous regions of base rock or mountain pediments all run into the basins though the platforms, and sand areas and many of the lakes were formed in the depression or the various sub-depressions. The upheaval of Bayinwula Mountain after Helan Mountain resulted in the formation of the Jilantai Depression. The water masses originated from Helan and Bayinwula Mountains are transferred almost completely into the depression, and the pediment of the Jilantai Salt Lake was formed. The relic of the dried rivers formed by the waters indicates that the climate of the region became progressively drier, and the Lake became saltier. Our results provide some scientific information for further studies of the water resources of the region.
