Abstract: |
The ethanol extracts of seaweed belonging to Chlorophyta, Rhodophyta and Phaeophyta, collected from Shandong coast in May 2000, were assayed their activities against two kinds of bacteria of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aurens. As a result, the water phase of extracts of Symphyocladia latiuscula, Desmarestia viridis, Rhodomela confervoides and Ulva pertusa showed activities against Escherichia coli. The EtOAc phase of extracts of Symphyocladia latiuscula, Sargassum kjelimanianum, Rhodomela confervoides, Leathesia difformes and the water phase of extract of Desmarestia viridis showed activities against Staphylococcus aurens . Brown algae had the highest activities, then red algae, and green algae had the lowest activities. Five species of seaweed, Desmarestia viridis, Sargassum kjelimanianum, Leathesia difformes, Symphyocladia latiuscula and Rhodomela confervoides showed high antibacterial activities. Thin layer chromatography(TLC) was used to separate the extracts of the five species of seaweed and each band was examined for their anti-bacterial activities. It turned out that 16 bands showed activities against Staphylococcus aurens and 11 bands showed activities against Escherichia coli. Three bands from Desmarestia viridis and Sargassum kjelimanianum had powerful activities against Staphylococcus aurens and two bands from Desmarestia viridis could inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli vigorly. Compared with some common antibiotics, the activities of these five bands from Desmarestia viridis and Sargassum kjelimanianum were stronger. |
