Abstract: |
A new species of the genus Meristiella, Meristiellaflorigia Kuang et Xia, is described from specimens collected in Yongxing Island, the Xisha (Paracel) Islands in the South China Sea. The distinguishing feature of the new species is associated with the structure of the cystocarp, which differs from cystocarps of Betaphycus gelatinum and Eucheuma arnoldii, as well as Kappaphycus by showing a central, small-celled placenta rather than a large fusion cell. Additionally, loosely clustered gonimoblast filaments extend radially from the placenta, and are not enclosed in gel-like cavities as shown in Eucheuma and Betaphycus.
This new species can be distinguished from M. gelidium, the type species of this genus by the following characters: cylindrical to some what compressed thallus, with irregular branches, smooth when young, the surface becoming surrounded by some protuberances and spines when maturing; cystocarps formed on main axes. Thallus intransverse section having 2 layers of cortical cells, medulla composed of pseudoparenchymatous cells gradually enlarging from outer to center layers, small and large cells mixed in the cylindrical axes.
Diagnosis of the new species: Meristiellaflorigia sp. nov. (Fig.1, Fig.2).
Thallus cylindrical to somewhat compressed, irregularly branching, surrounded by some protuberances and spines; cystocarps hemi-spherical, on main axes; younger branches, rather smooth, issuing from the old part of the frond.
Mature cystocarp like flower, protubering from the center of the flower, dark purplish red in color; composed of a central, small-celled placentum rather than a large fusion cell. Packets of outwardly radiating carposporangia surrounding the central placentum. Pericarp thin, issuing inwardly traversing filaments. Tetrasporangia and spermatangia unknown.
