Abstract: |
To investigate the distribution of 5-HT in the central nervous systems of M. japonicus, 5-HT antisera in rabbit and immunocytochemistry method of Strept Avidin-Biotin-Complex were applied to observe 5-HT-immunoreactive neurons and neuropils in optical, brain, and thoracic ganglion. Results showed that except for lamina ganglionaris (LG), 5-HT-immunoreactivity were found in medulla externa (ME), medulla interna (MI), and medulla terminalis (MT) in optic ganglia. There were a few 5-HT- immunoreactive cells in ME and MI, but much more cells in MT and some small immunoreactive cells aggregated in X organ. Many 5-HT-immunoreactive cells were located in anterior median cluster. The anterior medial protocerebrum neuropils (AMPN) and central body also showed 5-HT immunoreactivity in protocerebrum. There were many 5-HTimmunoreactive cells of different sizes distributed in the inner cell cluster lateral to olfactory in the deutocerebrum. Only a few large 5-HT-immunoreactive cells were found in the clusters of posterior median, lateral, and posterior lateral of tritocerebrum. 5-HT- immunoreactive cells were less in the thoracic ganglions. Only one pair 5-HT- immunoreactive cells were located in the fourth thoracic ganglion and two pairs immunoreactive cells in the fifth thoracic ganglion. The neuropils showed no 5-HT immunoreactivity.
The 5-HT immunoreactivity distribution in central systems of M. japonicus provided morphological proofs for its neurophysiological functions and phylogeny of crustacean ventral nerve cords. Further investigation is suggested on exact content and 5-HT mechanics in different physiological states |
