Abstract:
We analyzed the internal solitary waves (ISWs) and the interactions in the northern South China Sea (NSCS) from a large number of satellite remote sensing images to understand the characteristics of spatial and temporal distributions of ISWs and interactions. The results indicate that most of the interactions distributed in two regions:near the northwest of Dongsha Island and the south of Hainan Island. In the first region, ISWs propagate to the Dongsha Island and diffract. The diffracted ISWs split into two packets and keep propagating westward, and then interact with each other. In the second region, ISWs propagate to the Hainan Island and reflect, and the reflected ISWs interact with other ISWs. In addition, we combined the in-situ measured data and satellite remote sensing images to simulate the amplitudes and phase speeds of the studied ISWs based on KdV equation and Benjamin-One equation. The results obtained from satellite images are in good agreement with the internal wave amplitudes and phase speeds of the actual region of the northern South China Sea.
