Abstract:
Using multi-source satellite remote-sensing data and reanalysis data, we systematically investigated a mesoscale cold-core eddy response to Super Typhoon Talim in the Western North Pacific Ocean. Results indicate that the cold eddy was intensified during the passage of Typhoon Talim, and accompanied with maximum sea level anomaly (SLA) reduction of 32.7cm. Moreover, we observed the largest sea surface temperature (SST) drop by more than 3℃. By calculating the dynamic parameters of the cold vortex area, we discovered that both the local non-geostrophic effect and the mixing effect were significantly enhanced. In addition, the Rossby number, strain, and the instantaneous rate of separation (IROS) parameter increased by more than two times. The maximum strain and IROS parameter appeared in the area near the typhoon path in the southern side of the cold-core eddy. This study shall be significant for in-depth understanding of eddy-typhoon interaction and oceanic ecological environment effects.
