THE DISTRIBUTION OF MERCURY IN DOWNSTREAM AND ESTUARY OF CHANGJIANG RIVER |
|
Abstract: |
The distribution oi mercury in downstream and estuary of Changjiang River hat been studied. Mercury contents in the samples taken from downstream and estuary in October 1983, were determined by cold-vapour atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The results indicate that the range of concentration of total mercury in the surface water varied from 0.013 to 0.141μg/L; the range of concentration oi particle and dissolved mercury in the surface water varied from 0.001 to 0.134μg/L. and 0.002 to 0.026μg/L, and /that of mercury in sediments Varied from 0.007 to 0.093μg/g. The content of mercury in the downstream was compared with that in the estuary. It shows that in the surface water the contents of total and particle mercury in the downstream were generally higher than that in the estuary. But, the content of mercury in sediments was the highest in the estuary. The particulate phase is a major carrier for mercury in river and estuary systems. The relationship between the distribution of mercury and salinity of sea water ate also discussed, the result shows that a salinity in the range of 0-10 has a great effect on the transport of mercury from sea water to bottom sediments. |
