Abstract:
A novel monitorable and controllable long-coring system with maximum operating depth 6 000 m was developed in order to obtain high quality long sediment cores of deep sea sediments. The sampling process is powered by the kinetic energy gained during the dropping of the system and the hammering power provided by the hydraulic hammer successively. The sampling process has two steps: shallow penetration gravity sampling firstly and deep hammering sampling secondly. The system mainly consists of three units: the control unit on the deck, the sampling unit and the vertical type assembly unit. The monitoring system is mounted on in the compressive cabins surrounding the hydraulic hammer. The prototype with most functions of the long coring system was tested successfully during sea trials and worked as primary sampler during several research cruises both in shallow and deep waters.
