Abstract:
The Conidae family is a group of predatory marine gastropods that are present in tropical and temperate seas. Due to the diversity of their toxins, Conidae family has been the focus of many pharmaceutical studies. The South China Sea is rich source of Conidae. For this group, the development of resources and its related research require a robust phylogeny and taxonomy. This paper reviews the progress of taxonomic research on Conidae and discusses the problems and shortcomings prevalent in the taxonomy of this group in China. To improve and modify the existing systematics of this family, we will study the materials/composition of the Conidae family in Chinese waters, using an integrative taxonomic approach incorporating both morphology and molecular data. Similar studies throughout the world will narrow the gap and increase our understanding on the composition and distribution of these species.
