Abstract:
This study utilizes VOSviewer and Citespace software to analyze and visually present the current status and future trends in mesoscale eddy research. By examining literature from the Web of Science core database, the study quantitatively analyzes the number of publications, countries/regions, institutions, disciplinary distribution, journal sources, cited authors, and keywords. The results indicate an overall increasing trend in the number of publications on mesoscale eddy research, with the United States leading in this field and exerting considerable influence. China ranks second in the number of publications but needs to enhance the research quality and innovativeness and increase international collaboration. The primary disciplines involve environmental science, marine freshwater biology, oceanography, and ecology, reflecting a trend toward interdisciplinary development. Current research hotspots in this field encompass aspects such as the morphology and dynamics cognition of eddies, analysis of eddy material transport processes and mechanisms, eddy–atmosphere coupling effects, and eddy ecological effects. However, difficult issues such as energy dissipation in mesoscale eddies and sub-mesoscale processes remain challenging and require further exploration by scientists worldwide. Based on bibliometric analysis, this study provides insights into the current status and future development trends of mesoscale eddy research, serving as a reference for subsequent studies in this field.
