Abstract:
Marine holoplanktonic mollusk species include all kinds of gastropods with planktonic lifestyle, composed mainly of Pteropoda and Heteropoda; they are widely distributed in the upper water of all oceans and play an important ecological role in the marine food web and carbon cycle and as an indicator of local changing environments. The taxonomy and diversity of marine holoplanktonic mollusks have not been adequately investigated owing to fewer morphological variations in some species, difficulty in integrally preserving specimens, and confusing literature in species identification. Therefore, this paper outlines the taxonomic advances of pteropods and heteropods, concludes the species distribution characteristics of holoplanktonic mollusks in global oceans, summarizes factors influencing their diversity distribution, and analyzes the status of their research in China to attract Chinese scholars’ attention to marine holoplanktonic mollusks and improve the research level of marine biodiversity in China.
