Abstract:
This study investigated the effect of salinity-tolerant bacteria induced by polysaccharides derived from the seaweed Grateloupia filicina on the rehabilitation of soda saline soil and its effect on plant growth through polysaccharide-bacteria or polysaccharide-bacteria-plant interactions. The salinity-tolerant bacteria reduced the pH of the saline soil. The addition of polysaccharides alone increased the inorganic phosphorus content of the soil; a combination of the bacteria and the polysaccharide solution (PB) markedly enhanced the available nitrogen and organic matter content. Thus, we further examined the remediation efficiency of the polysaccharide-bacteria-plant combination. G. filicina polysaccharides induced the proliferation of saline-tolerant bacteria, which significantly promoted the growth of cucumber plants during the remediation of soda saline soil, mainly in terms of stem, leaf, and root biomass. The PB-treated group had the lowest levels of soil organic matter and inorganic phosphorus, which was consistent with the best growth status of cucumber plants. Microbial diversity analysis revealed that PB treatment increased soil microbial enzyme activities and induced the proliferation of beneficial bacteria, such as Mesobacillus, Fictibacillus arsenicus, Ensifer adhaerens, and Lysobacter. This study proposes a novel method for the remediation of soda saline-alkali soils.
